Romantic Hotels in Portugal

Roses are red, violets are blue, and this Valentine’s Day we have the hotel for you…

Dia dos Namorados, as it’s known here in Portugal, is a day to celebrate love or essentially an excuse for us to all eat lots of chocolate and hope someone sends us flowers. Over the years the day has evolved to galentine’s day or palentine’s day, however we’re all about the romance this February and this glorious country is filled with lots of glorious hotels to explore.
So why wait, take your Valentine to one of our selected nine;

1. Valverde Santar Hotel & Spa, Viseu
Located in the North of Portugal, this gorgeous spa hotel is ideal for a few days away. The property boasts 21 rooms and suites, a series of living and meeting rooms full of history, a restaurant serving Portuguese haute cuisine, an impressive spa with a large indoor pool and an idyllic post-Renaissance garden with an outdoor heated pool and plenty of picture-perfect places to walk or relax. Being a Relais and Chateaux property their culinary expertise are set to impress.

2. Vila Vita Parc, The Algarve

Often famed as a more of a family friendly place, this stunning coastal resort also caters for couples. They have an adults only wing with breathtaking sea views that are so good you may want to just order room service and not leave. If you travel with your little ones their kids club and babysitting services are fantastic, which gives you time to have lunch on the beach or a romantic dinner for two in their wine cellar.

3. Octant Furnas, The Azores

With direct flights from Faro to Ponta Delgada it couldn’t be easier to travel to the Hawaii of Europe. The Azores is an adventurer’s playground with whale watching and dramatic volcanic scenery. Time to get steamy at the Octant Furnas, by this we mean bathing in the hotel’s hot springs of course. This romantic boutique’s interiors pay homage to the island’s natural beauty with accent walls showing off waterfalls and calderas, plant pots aplenty and natural colourways. You can also bring your furbabies here, who will actually be VIPd more than you!

4. Quinta do Porto Nogueira, Óbidos
An undiscovered gem lies 40 minutes north of Lisbon. Quinta do Porto Nogueira is the essence of a family owned boutique hotel, which to our delight is also housed on a vineyard. You can spend your afternoons strolling through vines and sipping on wines before enjoying a homemade candlelit dinner. The interiors are boho chic with cosy touches such as a fireplace overlooked by your king bed. We also loved their outdoor fire pit which should be coupled with a glass of one of their vinho tintos.

5. The Rebello, Porto
New to the Portuguese hotel scene, The Rebello is not to be missed! Perfectly positioned for jaw dropping views over Porto and the river Douro, if not from your room then from their rooftop bar. Think industrial chic meets Portuguese heritage. They also have an unbelievable spa, which let’s face it is all we want from a weekend getaway (and wine, which is definitely on the menu). Nothing says I love you like booking the latest trendy hotel.

6. The Six Senses Douro Valley, Douro Valley
The current grand dam of luxury hotels in Portugal, and for good reason might we add. Located in one of Portugal’s most celebrated wine regions, The Six Senses is perched on a hilltop in a 19th century manor. As a brand their focus is on wellbeing and this Portuguese edition is no exemption to the rule – spend your afternoons making your own body scrubs or perfecting your yoga form with views of the valley. The food is also very much garden to table and the hotel can even arrange a romantic picnic for you.

7. Casa de S. Lourenço, Serra da Estrela
If snow capped mountains and cosying up by a fire doesn’t scream romance then we don’t know what does. A humble bed and breakfast turned sleek mountain lodge, Casa de São Lourenço is an ideal hideaway with your loved one. Explore the many mountain trails near the hotel before heading back for a spot of soothing R&R in their spa. Their floor to ceiling glass-fronted restaurant with jaw-dropping views is just the place for dinner for two.

8. Immerso, Ericeira
From snowy mountains to surfer’s paradise, Immerso is a super trendy zen-like hotspot for the ample surfer who wants the lap of luxury to boot. The decor is simple with modern touches and this is very much a “slow” hotel with sustainability at the forefront. The Hopeless romantic in you can swoon over endless horizons, pine-scented breezes and starlit evenings wine in hand soundtracked by crashing surf.

9. Dá Licença, The Alentejo

If this place isn’t on your radar, it should be.
Dá Licença is the labor of love from a successful duo. Vitor Borges and Franck have brought their aesthetic ideas, sensibilities, tastes and ways of looking at the world to create a unique hotel noticeable for its commitment to quality and artistry. Plus, it’s adults only and a real place to unplug from the outside world.

All of these hotels are available to book through Pippa Rose Travel, who will tailor make your trip and ensure you are VIPd during your stay; whether that’s a complimentary upgrade, a food and beverage credit or a massage.

~ CITY ~

Gastronomic Treat

Home to one of Spain’s most luxurious properties is the historic city of San Sebastian. Grand and elegant in style, this charming palace provides the perfect base to explore the cultural city and its rich heritage.

A Dorchester collection hotel

Hotel Eden is a classically elegant yet refreshingly unstuffy grande dame in a 19th-century villa near the Spanish Steps Borghese Gardens.

You’ll never go hungry here, or in Rome in general, but the Michelin star restaurant would be pretty nice to spoil yourselves with on your city-moon!

After dinner go to the rooftop bar to marvel at the capital of the ancient world…

Waldorf Astoria, Amsterdam

17th Century Palatial charm

No detail is too small for this hotel. Whether you want your partners favourite flowers to be waiting on arrival or your first song to be playing as you enter your room, they really go above and beyond for their clients.

Each comes with a view of either the canal or the beautiful courtyard garden, and are rather spacious (a rarity for city hotels).

After walking or cycling around the the buzzy Dutch city, the hotel will welcome you back with a high tea, massage in the spa, dip in their pool or even a private cookery lesson!

There is just something so romantic about the timeless elegance at Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam on the UNESCO ‘Gentlemen’s Canal’.

Stylish and sophisticated safari life

Situated on the south-eastern Okavango Delta, in pride of place within a private nature reserve of almost 20,000 acres. The location of the Sandibe Camp was carefully chosen for its outstanding natural beauty and close proximity to some of the most wildlife-rich wilderness in this part of Africa, now a Unesco World Heritage Site. After a light aircraft transfer from Maun or Kasane, you can get straight into safari mode with a pleasant 45-minute game drive to camp.

There are twelve suites at Sandibe, all raised on stilts above the ground to make the most of the stunning views, sweeping across the river and the plains. The rooms are intimate and spacious at the same time; nestled amongst the trees, decorated in light natural tones with vast open-plan living areas. Each comes with a private multi-level viewing deck complete with a personal pool and outdoor shower.

Traditional wildlife experience

Under the magnificent shade trees, on the banks of a seasonal river in the remote southern sector of the Ruaha National Park, Jongomero is gloriously isolated.  Far from the madding crowds, this secluded idyll offers a chance to discover true unadulterated wilderness.

Ruaha, Tanzania, also holds one of the greatest populations of elephant in any African park. Buffalo gather in large herds, as well as giraffe, zebra, impala, eland, hippo, crocodile, lion and leopard. The rarer, lesser-seen creatures can also be found, including sable and roan antelope, dikdik, greater and lesser kudus, Grants gazelle and honey badgers. It is second only to Selous Game Reserve for the largest population of wild dog.  Let their experienced guides show you the wealth of biodiversity Ruaha has to offer, with game drives, game walks and walking safaris.

Marine safari life

The perfect Crusoe fantasy. Just nine thoroughly romantic seafront villas on a baobab-studded island in a remote archipelago, with pathways through shady forests to crescent beaches on which turtles heave up to lay their eggs, and a reef so close you can snorkel back to your room after breakfast.

Can’t get away from work? Raising a family? Want to spread a single, major honeymoon across a series of bite-sized escapes? For a variety of reasons, neatly packed romantic getaways have become increasingly popular. This flexibility is the appeal of the mini-moon. But don’t confuse ‘mini’ with ‘minor’ – they’re still packed to the rafters with luxurious lodges, heavenly hotels, and exhilarating experiences. Check out just some of our mini-moon trips below.

Rural retreat

Nestled deep in the remote Tuscan countryside, Borgo Pignano is a hidden gem that exudes authentic rural charm with a dose of magic. Set on 750 hectares of pristine rolling hills, this unique retreat was originally a hamlet dating back from the Etruscan times.

With only 14 rooms in the main 18th-century villa and a handful of casas dotted around the hamlet, at this intimate retreat you can’t help but feel instantly revived. A place that doesn’t just look good, but feels good, Borgo Pignano specialises in organic bio-dynamic homegrown produce which makes for the perfect refuel after days exploring the surrounding countryside – or perhaps just hitting the spa.

Volcanic horizon

Iceland is a remarkable destination famed for one of a kind landscapes of stunning natural beauty. From exploding geysers to thundering waterfalls and steaming hot pools, treat yourself to a luxury holiday in Iceland. Quite possibly the most enviable address in the country, The Retreat at Blue Lagoon is a place where ‘at’ really means ‘at’. With wall to wall glass, you’re at the centre of the geothermal waters, we would happily move in.

Traditional Moroccan retreat

Perched high in the Atlas mountains, Kasbah Tamadot is a majestic retreat sumptuously decorated for decadent mountain luxury. The name is berber for ‘soft breeze’, signifying the fresh air and calm environment.

Rich red carpets, intricately carved wooden furniture, pillows and throws that create a warm, traditional Moroccan feel. All suites include a terrace or balcony, and the master suite has its own private pool. The berber tents are one step up, being out on their own decks with huge soft sofas, heavy Moroccan doors, bronze lamps, and canvas walls which can be tied up to reveal panoramic views of the mountains. These are tents fit for a king and we highly recommend them.

The hideaway lodge

Set in neatly manicured grounds on the outskirts of the New Forest, Lime Wood is easily accessible from London. For honeymoon perfect privacy, pick the Pavilion Forest Lodge- a separate lodge away from the house. Complete with a four-poster bed, a private terrace overlooking the countryside and a roll top bath in the bay window.

Lord and Lady of the manor

‘Whatever you fancy, wherever you fancy it’ is the moto at Foxhill Manor. It really is like staying with very tasteful, very accommodating friends – who have no rules! Your personal host will be on hand 24 hours a day to make sure you have everything you need, every minute of your stay. With just eight bedrooms, the revitalised Arts and Crafts mansion is a contemporary Cotswolds country home with 400 acres to play in.

What we love about this place is the freedom to roam the Manor as you please. It allows flexibility to shape your experience, so pop into the kitchen, speak to the head chef and create your own bespoke menu. And the of course, you can eat it anywhere you want. Burger in the bath anyone?

Aside from thinkers and planners we are also a Prezola ambassador and our clients are entitled to the platinum wedding gift list service.
